Advancing FAIR+CARE Practices in Cultural Heritage Project Focus Group

The Advancing FAIR+CARE Practices in Cultural Heritage project (of which NATHPO is a part) is hosting a focus group on September 19 from 12 - 1:30 PM Eastern Time to discuss how Tribal archaeological information and data are collected, managed and used.

We hope this work informs practical and actionable outcomes for organizations and agencies across the cultural heritage sector. Tribal involvement in the project can inform Tribal needs often overlooked in data-centric projects.

More about the project and the aims of the focus group:

The FAIR+CARE Cultural Heritage Network and the Advancing FAIR+CARE Practices in Cultural Heritage project (https://alexandriaarchive.org/fair-care/) is a 3-year project, supported by funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The project is working to develop, disseminate, and promote ethical good practice guidance and digital data governance models in cultural heritage management and archaeology by integrating digital data governance (FAIR) and Indigenous data governance principles (CARE) into everyday work practices.

Questions to consider:

Have Western researchers and agencies collected information from your nation and community about sacred sites, archaeological sites, hunting, fishing and plant harvesting places?

Have you and your Tribe benefitted from this data collection?

As THPO staff, have you received data from researchers and/or agencies that you cannot reuse readily as part of your everyday work (e.g. as pdf, GIS layers or spreadsheets without additional information, etc)?

Have you experienced difficulties in getting access to data repositories that have information about the Tribes you work with?

Are you interested in training and resources that can help you in managing and using data in your everyday work?

If you answered "yes" to one or all of the above, please participate in this focus group about barriers in managing and using data about the nation and communities you work with.
