1st Annual Northern California Tribal Summit on Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP)

Tuesday, October 4, 2022 (8:30 AM - 5:00 PM) (PDT)

Description

1st Annual Northern California Tribal Summit on Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP)

October 4, 2022 | 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. PT

The Yurok Tribe and Tribes across California are working to address the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People and invite you to a very special Tribal Policy Summit on MMIP on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, in Arcata, California.

The MMIP epidemic is a national humanitarian crisis, with California ranking fifth in the nation for incidents of MMIP, and the far north of the state accounting for most cases. Homicide is the third leading cause of death for Indigenous women and girls. In some Tribal communities, Indigenous women face murder rates that are more than 10 times the national average.

The summit will foster a space that centers Tribal leadership and expertise where people are able to deeply engage through attention to wellness, culture and community; provide clear direction for state and federal lawmakers on priority strategies for addressing the crisis, and roles they can and/or will play in advancing those solutions; and grow and advance partnerships to make critical policy changes in the next two years.
